Passing your HGV test is a massive achievement, but for many, the real challenge starts the moment you have the license in your hand. If you are searching for new pass HGV driver jobs, you’ve likely noticed that many employers ask for two years experience. At Turbo Driving, we do things a little differently. We know that every veteran driver started as a new pass, and we’ve built a roadmap to help navigate those first 180 days on the road safely and successfully.
Where Can You Work as a New Pass?
One of the biggest hurdles is finding an employer that will take a chance on a fresh license. Currently, we have one main client who is actively accepting newly qualified drivers, offering a fantastic environment to get those initial miles under your belt. A key client offering our new pass scheme is EVRi in Warrington and Rugby, we currently have multiple successful new pass drivers on this scheme. Hear from one of our successful hires:
“They took the time out and didn’t rush me through it. They said take your time, if there’s any questions just ask us or the driver trainers here at EVRi, so they work in conjunction with one another very well” – Declan, HGV Class 1 Driver
The Reality Check: Hours and Lifestyle
The “main failure point” we see in the first six months isn’t usually the driving itself, but the lifestyle shift into an industry that operates 24/7.
The challenge is usually the underestimation of the long hours and unsociable start times that can often be 3am starts or late-night shifts, it’s understandable that if you’re not used to it, it can be a shock to the system.
Our solution? We provide dedicated training managers to help prevent burnout. They aren’t just there for technical skills but to help manage the transition into the professional driving lifestyle, offering advice on rest, nutrition and managing the 12-15 hour spread.
Mastering the Manoeuvres
Ask any assessor why drivers fail their initial site assessment and they will, more often than not, give you the same answer: reversing. While your driving lessons focus on road safety and forward motion, real-world delivery bays are tight and busy. Many new drivers haven’t had the repetitive practice needed to reverse a 44-tonne vehicle into a narrow bay with confidence.
One pro tip we have for this is: Slow and steady wins the race. Never be afraid to “shunt” (pull forward) to realign. It is much better to take three shunts and get it in safely than to hit a trailer or a bollard because you’re rushing. Our trainers are always on hand with care, advice and guidance.
Why Choose Turbo Driving
We don’t just find you a shift and leave you to it. We understand that your first six months are the most critical period of your driving career.
